How to build confidence

How to build confidence? A very basic question, right? Maybe for those who are confident already. Are you shy? Do you feel like you can’t do it or have some thoughts in the back of your mind telling you:

  • Don’t do it
  • You are not ready for it
  • They will laugh at you
  • You gonna fail
  • Let someone else do it
  • You don’t have to do it
  • You know you are not meant for this
  • Last time it did not go well, so is today
  • You are going to be rejected
  • They will question you, etc?

These are the questions that will dominate your mind when you are not confident. Once these questions take over, you will no longer have the courage to move forward. It will be hard for you to make that next step of accomplishing greatness. Instead of doing it, you will retract. You will want to run away or disappear. Thoughts of quitting will visit your mind.

When it comes to building self-confidence, what you know matters. Confidence is a state of mind. The feeling that you are ready to conquer the world and everything will go exactly the way you anticipated. The feeling that you can move a mountain and there is none to stop you.

Knowledge is the key to confidence. For example, let’s say that you have a presentation coming next week and you are asked to work on a particular topic. What do you think will increase your confidence on the stage? One of the answers: You must know what you are talking about. Period. Dive deep into the topic and learn as much as possible. The more you know the better.

When you know so much about a topic, you end up running the show. People start learning from you and that makes you feel invincible. Hence, increasing your confidence. On the other hand, if you had that presentation and have not done your homework, you will feel ashamed. It will be extremely difficult for you to set foot on the stage. Your inner thoughts will tell you to not go on the stage. Once the feeling of embarrassment has set in, your confidence level will disappear altogether.

This is why the best way to build confidence is to increase your knowledge. Learn as much as you can in your area of interest. This will help you build self-confidence and boost your morale.

What about building self-confidence in your normal life?

This example was only about presentations. What about normal life? How can you boost your confidence in your day-to-day life? Again, what you know matters. Here is a question for you. How do you feel when you are the only one able to solve a problem your friends, partners, or family members, or even strangers are struggling with? You feel important, right?

You feel like you are making a difference. These thoughts increase your morale and give you peace of mind. In addition, when you know what you are talking about, people around you will treat you with respect and come to you for help. The end result is astonishing. Being in such a spot, boost your confidence and makes you feel like you are on top of the world. With such kind of knowledge, you will start interacting with all kinds of people even those you don’t know. That is what life is about. Building relationships and connecting with people.

People tend to be shy when they don’t have answers. Those who have answers are the ones who have educated themselves and are ready to participate. It does not matter if it is a normal life or professional life. What you know matters, and for this reason, you must increase your knowledge if you want to boost your confidence.

2. How to build confidence: Practice, practice, and practice more

There is a saying that practice makes perfect. This is true regardless of how you look at it or where it is being applied. If you want to master a skill, there is only one way to do it: Practice.

The first few times will be easy since you will be starting out with excess motivation. Of course, it depends on what you are practicing. Some skills are much harder when you are starting out. However, as you navigate through the process, things will get a little harder as your motivation runs out. The thoughts of giving up will visit your mind. After surviving this level, the following steps will be much easier as you would have built a ton of knowledge on the subject and making fewer mistakes.

The point here is that you must practice, fail, practice again, fail again until you have mastered the subject. Being confident is a goal that must be achieved. Good goals require patience and time. On top of this, never give up. Continue working on it until you have achieved your goals. Once it is achieved, your confidence will be extraordinary. The feeling of winning will outweigh the fear of failure. That is how you build confidence.

3. Become the master of your craft

We have talked about increasing knowledge and practice. These two elements will put you ahead of the game but not too far. The best way to increase self-confidence is to become the master of your craft. It does not matter what it is you are good at. Just be good. Become so good that everyone around you will be coming to you for help.

Master your craft that people will fly to your place to get your wisdom or listen to what you have to say. Become better than anyone else so that the whole universe will flock to your website to buy your products instead of your competitors. At this level, you will not worry about confidence anymore. Your inner feeling will tell you to keep going and inspire more people. This is how you build self-confidence. Do not be the king of the game. Be the god of the game. That is how you do it.

Building confidence also goes with understanding your weaknesses. Knowing where you are struggling gives you a chance to prepare yourself ahead of time. Your competitors will hit you hard at your weakest spot. Know that area and focus on making it stronger and better.

None knows everything and everyone has a weak spot. What is yours? Is it public speaking? Is it looking people in the eyes and tell them you love them? What about learning a new language, etc?

These are the questions you must ask yourself when evaluating your weaknesses. I am a strong believer that every weakness can be corrected or improved. Knowing where you are struggling will help you ask the right questions and get the right help. You will be building self-confidence by improving your weakest spot.

5. Have a positive mindset

Positivity matters. During your journey to building confidence, you will face many challenges. You will want to give up and feel like you are drowning in a never-ending ocean of hardship. You will feel helpless and have nowhere to turn. Your friends will abandon you and your family members will think you are losing your mind.

What do you think happens at this point?

Well, most people give up at this point. They just let it go and become like everyone else. So, they give up on their dreams and forget about whatever they were chasing. That is a big price to pay.

What about you?

Are you going to give in to your fear and become like everyone else? Or you are going to keep going and push harder like never before? How are you going to keep going when everyone else around you has abandoned you?

The answer lies in one simple and yet powerful answer: OPTIMISM. You must stay positive throughout the whole process. Look at yourself in the eye in front of a mirror and say: Things are going to be alright and you are going to emerge victoriously. That is all you need do to. Repeat this until your mind has registered this information. Your brain is like a car that is ready to be driven. Your brain will accept whatever you put in it. If you register positive thoughts, you will be a positive person. On the other hand, if you dwell on negativity and undermine your ability to conquer the world, you will not achieve it.

Keep your mind clear of negative thoughts. Focus on what matters to you and forget about negative people. Believe in yourself and keep your mind on the prize. Even if all your friends abandon you and your family members retract their arms, you will still achieve what you desire. A positive mindset will help you build confidence and become the best version of yourself.

Are you planning to meet someone special at your dinners? What about taking someone out or asking them to marry you? There are a ton of questions you can ask yourself on this matter.

Know what your audience likes and doesn’t like. Study your audience and know how to behave around them. For example, if you are asking a person to marry you, you must at least know the kind of language to use. What works on one person will not work on others. One wrong sentence can end your entire relationship. This goes beyond relationships and regular life.

If you are doing a presentation, try to answer these questions.
  • Who is going to be your audience?
  • How many people are going to be there?
  • Where do they stand in terms of hierachy and experience compared to you?
  • How old are they?

The second challenge is and the hardest one is how you choose to respond to what is thrown at you. After someone has yelled at you, what is your next step? Do you punch them in the face or do you ignore them and move on? The answers to these questions make all the difference.

The truth is that you cannot control what people say or do to you. You cannot control, change, or decide what people think about you. Only God can do that. The only thing you can control is YOUR RESPONSE to what happens to you.

Focusing on what others think about you is a major mistake as you cannot do anything about it. The only thing you gain is misery, anxiety, and stress. A stressed body cannot be confident. Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

Negative thoughts are some of the worst feelings you can have in your mind. Being negative means that you are not happy about yourself or the environment around you. Nothing seems to work out in your life. You are always struggling. The world is not perfect, etc.

These thoughts are hard to get rid of once they have been ingrained in your mind. It is hard to unroot negative thoughts once you start believing in them. With this mind, you never seem to see happiness within yourself. This mentality is the foundation of the lack of confidence.

How are you going to be confident about investment if you think the world is falling apart? That would be difficult to believe and hard to achieve. What you can do to avoid negative thoughts and build confidence is to focus on positivity. Even if you think the world is falling apart, find something good you can focus your mind on. How to build confidence

Procrastination is the source of all failure in life. Procrastinators are never happy, never together, and are always struggling. Procrastination is one of the worst behaviors anyone can have.

Why is procrastination so bad? Procrastinating something means that you push it further and further in the future. For example, if there is a project due in two weeks, you keep telling yourself that you have enough time. After one week, your approach is still the same. I don’t want to start the project. I still have an entire week.

Two days before the due dates you realize that you have not started working on it. So, you start and rush to the finishing line and end up having sleepless nights trying to get it done.

What is wrong with this method?

Procrastination is the true cause of mediocre performance. You heard that right. When you procrastinate, you don’t get to work on your project effectively. You never conduct enough research. In the end, you end up working on the project at the last minute which leads you to submit whatever you have. Good or not, you submit it. Without putting in enough effort, you never believe in the work you have done. You are always thinking that maybe someone has done much better work than you. This will make it difficult to build confidence in yourself and in the work you have done.

What you can do instead, is to avoid procrastination. Work on the project ahead of time and put in enough effort. By doing so, you will make sure that no stone was left unturned. This will make you a great performer and one of the most confident people out there.

30. Avoid negative self-talk

The self-negative talk will never get you anywhere. You will always have trouble finding your place in this beautiful dying world. Negative self-talk is nothing other than the thought in the back of your mind that is constantly telling you: You cannot do it.

Instead of trying to figure out the answer, your mind tells you to run. Why are you trying to work on something that is beyond your reach, your mind asks. Telling yourself that you cannot do something takes you away from doing it. And if you do work on the project, you give up much faster and easier when things get tough.

You can’t push harder when there are a million voices in your head telling you to quit. In order to build confidence, you must avoid negative self-talk.

Now we are at the one part you probably don’t want to hear about. Avoiding alcohol, tobacco products, and anything else that will make you think sideways. All these products invade your mind, challenge your thinking abilities, and decrease your health. With all these side effects, it is extremely difficult to stay confident.

The time you could have used to learn and improve your intellectual abilities is wasted while high or dealing with hangovers. If you want to achieve real-life changing skills and build your confidence, avoid all these products.

38. How to build confidence: Do not be arrogant

Arrogance is bad behavior that is not tolerated by anyone around the world. You cannot have peace with yourself or with people around you if you are arrogant.

You cannot get respect from people you disrespect and step on. Building confidence will be difficult if your audience is throwing shoes and rocks at you. So, give up your arrogance and treat everyone with respect.

39. Believe in yourself

Believing is achieving. If you cannot achieve something in your mind, you cannot achieve it outside. Before you try to build your confidence outside, start with your inside first. Your subconscious will register the information you put in it. Think about confidence for a while, your subconscious will make that a priority. Tell your mind that you want to be confident, and you will find it easy to build confidence.

Here is an exercise you can use to train your mind. Every day goes in front of the mirror, look yourself in the eyes and say:

  • I want to be confident
  • I am going to be confident
  • My confidence is on point
  • I will do whatever it takes to be confident
  • I am a confident person

Repeat this exercise multiple times every day starting from the morning. Keep practicing it until it is fully registered in your mind. Once your subconscious has registered this information, you will start to feel more confident. This will make it much easier for you to build confidence in real life.

Feeling confident will be a starting point. Your next phase will be practicing some of the elements we talked about in this post. It is possible that you have most of the elements we talked about. However, if you struggle with some, start working on them today. Work hard and take one step forward every single day.
