Habits that are preventing you from achieving your dreams

Are you having trouble achieving your dreams? Millions of people are finding it difficult to achieve their dreams. This is because most people do not know what it takes to achieve their dreams or have habits that prevent them from reaching that extra milestone.

In this article, I have put together a list of 5 habits that are preventing you from achieving your dreams. If you work on these 5 habits you will be amazed by how fast and easy it will be for you to reach what you seek.

1. Procrastination

One of the biggest habits that are preventing you from achieving your dreams is procrastination. Procrastination is the act of postponing an important action or decision. If you were supposed to start a project today and decided to start it next week, you would have procrastinated on the starting date.

Many people think that as long as you can start and finish a project on time, it does not matter. However, when a project or a decision is postponed into the future without moving the deadline equal amount, you end up having fewer days/less time to work on it. Without enough time spent on the project, you end up doing half the research and putting in less effort. This leads to mediocre performances and less educated decisions.

These types of decisions lead to stress, anxiety, and poor solutions.

The following are some of the common language of procrastinators.

  • I still have enough time
  • I will do it later
  • It is not due yet
  • How about starting tomorrow?
  • I don’t have time
  • Why do we have to start it today
  • It is easy I will finish it in no time
  • Not now
  • Later
  • Maybe
  • I Will look into it
  • Give me more time
  • I got to take care of something else first

All these sentences and many more are the roots of procrastination and they are preventing you from achieving your dreams.

So, what can you do instead? How to avoid procrastination?

Since procrastination is a result of our mental programming and poor periodization, you can deal with it by changing your perspective about finding answers. Instead of pushing things in the future and finding reasons that justify your decision, start the project the moment received it. As long as you do something on it, it will be well done and on time.

You can also change the language you use on every decision and project you tackle. The following sentences can help you avoid procrastination.

  • I will start it right away
  • I am going to start now
  • There is not enough time left
  • Let’s do/start it today
  • I must start it now
  • Now
  • How about starting it now?
  • I want to submit it early
  • I must put in enough time
  • This is a priority

All these simple sentences create a sense of urgency in your subconscious and motivate you to start it right away. Once this information is registered in your mind, you start the project without hesitation. More importantly, you will have enough time to work on the project which will lead to high performance and achieve your dreams faster.

2. Spending your time on things that don’t matter prevents you from achieving your dreams

There are 24 hours in a day. Assuming that you work 8 hours and sleep 8 more, what do you do with the remaining 6 hours? Most people spend a few more hours with their family and waste the others on things that don’t matter. Matter of fact, the 8 hours you spend at work is not fully spent on work-related tasks.

Most of the time, you are gossiping, worrying about how you look, whether your clothes fit you or not, why someone looked at you that way, etc. Other people spend their time talking about nonsense or when they are going get off and get a beer, etc.

Others rush to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, shopping, video games right after getting home. They never read, educate themselves, or do something that can develop their intellectual levels. They never learn something new or improve what they already know. How can you achieve a dream that is bigger than you if you are not willing to pay the price?

Instead of wasting your time on things that don’t matter, start investing in yourself. Start reading books, learning how to invest, save money, create budgets, and control your emotions. Instead of worrying and driving yourself crazy from social media comments, close your account and use your time wisely. You could become smarter and achieve your dreams in no time if you invest the time you spend on social media in your personal growth.

3. The fear of failing is preventing you from achieving your dreams

Embrace failure is you want real success

One of the habits that are preventing you from achieving your dreams is the fear of failing. Failure can be detrimental to many people especially if you are using your savings to do something.

The bad news is that failure is the greatest teacher and you must embrace it if you want to achieve your dreams.

This is how it goes. You start a project thinking that you got all the right tools and resources, and later on, you realize that there is something you overlooked. So, you fail right after starting. Then, you correct your mistakes and start over or continue where you left off. Then, something comes and shuts you down. You go back to the drawing board and redesign your project until it is too good to fail.

Then, you start making some wins. Finally, your business picks up speed and skyrockets. Or you achieve a system that lets you achieve your dreams.

Do you see? Without failure, you will not thrive. If you want to achieve your dreams, consider failure as your greatest teacher. Just learn from your mistakes and move on.

4. Worrying too much about what people think

Most people spend an enormous amount of time worrying about what people think. Instead of working on their dreams, they worry too much about what their friends and family members think about it. If you have this habit, it will prevent you from achieving your dreams.

The people around you have nothing to do with your business. You are the one who will be doing it, spending countless hours crafting it, dealing with issues that come along, and much more. So, what they think is not relevant to the success of your business. Unless they are helping you build proper steps toward your dreams, you should not give a damn about what they think, say, do, or their reactions.

Humans are always quick to judge especially when it comes to things they don’t know or understand. So, if you are OK explaining how you will make it out, please, do so. Otherwise, just move on doing what you want to do and ignore the negativity from people.

Even if your idea is perfect, people will figure out a way to tell you how it will not work. You cannot satisfy everyone in your life. This is how it goes. You buy a white car, they tell you that you should have bought a grey one. You start a business, they tell you that you should have stuck to your 8-5 job and forget about it. They tell you that you should have stayed single after you have decided to get married. You start traveling, they tell you that it is a waste of money.

You cannot satisfy everyone. For this reason, worrying about what they think will prevent you from achieving your dreams.

5. Not learning: Ignorance is a bad habit that is preventing you from achieving your dreams

Learning is the key to success. If you are not learning a new skill, you are losing one. Even if you finished college, you are not done yet. Matter of fact, college is the beginning. The qualify of your after-school life will depend on how much you learn after graduation. What you learn in school is the foundation of what you need after school.

The world is changing and you should change with it. Pick up a book and learn a new skill. The more you learn, the smarter you will become. Hence, the faster you will achieve your dreams.

If you are having trouble achieving your dreams maybe it is because you have stopped learning and expected everything to come your way. You must struggle with life and find your way out. Only then you will achieve the dream you seek.
